Anike Foundation Helps to Improve Healthcare Facilities at Mafi-Dedukope Clinic, Ghana
Introduction
Access to safe, reliable healthcare is essential for mothers and newborns worldwide. Maternal mortality declined by 40% between 2000 and 2023, but despite the progress, there were still 197 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023 alone. Further action to protect pregnant mothers is necessary, which is why UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and other agencies are working closely with country governments, communities, and families to improve maternal and newborn health.
In Ghana, the Mafi-Dedukope Clinic provides healthcare to 7,500 people across various villages. Until recently, the clinic struggled with inadequate maternity care facilities. The quality of care for expectant mothers, postnatal care, and the availability of necessary medical supplies have been a serious issue.
To address this problem, Anike Foundation helped Child Survival Aid Ghana (CSAG) write a grant proposal that was funded by the New Zealand High Commission Fund (HEF). That funding made it possible to launch a targeted infrastructure initiative. The Improving Healthcare Facilities at Mafi-Dedukope Clinic project serves as a major step forward in strengthening maternal and child health services in the North Tongu District of Ghana.
The Project
Before the start of the Improving Healthcare Facilities at Mafi-Dedukope Clinic project, the clinic lacked appropriate resources to adequately care for maternal patients. This lack of resources placed strain on healthcare workers and increased health risks for expectant mothers.
With funding from HEF, CSAG added a maternity/labor ward, an antenatal care unit, a lying-in area after delivery, and a medical supplies storeroom to the Mafi-Dedukope Clinic, which now serves new mothers giving birth with new equipment and services.
Looking Ahead
CSAG, with help from Anike Foundation and HEF, strengthened the community by addressing gaps in maternal and infant care. The Improving Healthcare Facilities at Mafi-Dedukope Clinic project laid a strong foundation for continued improved health outcomes and increased trust in
healthcare, but there is more to be done. Consider supporting our mission by clicking the "Donate" button at the bottom of this page.
