EACO Medical Projects for Volunteers
General Global Health Students / Volunteers
As a volunteer, you will work with our dedicated clinic staff through assisting with patient intake, observing patient examinations, and assisting in the pharmacy. Volunteers also work extensively in the community by traveling with our Community Health Educators on home visits, assisting with mosquito net treatments, and leading health education sessions in local schools, providing health care and support for local residents. Medical Care Volunteering
One of the many volunteer abroad opportunities offered in Uganda through International Volunteer HQ invites you to assist in local clinics providing health care and support for local residents. Unfortunately, these clinics are low on resources and staff, so as a volunteer, your assistance is needed and cherished. You will work alongside doctors and nurses to take on a variety of cases depending on your level of experience.
To apply for these projects you must have completed at least two years of nursing or medical school, or be a fully qualified nurse or doctor.
Your volunteer opportunities through EACO’s medical program in Uganda can include maternity, pediatrics, geriatrics, laboratory, pharmacy, cancer screening, family planning, immunizations, de-worming, general medicine, gynecology, dentistry, and HIV/AIDS. In addition, you will have the chance to participate in community outreach and other work at least once a week - a great way to learn more about the people you’ll support, and their culture and needs.
Sports Education
If you want to volunteer with children in Uganda, sports education program may be the perfect fit: through this placement, you’ll help to teach physical education classes and lead other sports activities for students in a primary or secondary school. While you’ll generally follow the school curriculum and teach topics scheduled for that term, you’re also encouraged to introduce new games and activities to the students, and you’re invited to bring equipment along with you to help contribute to the program. In addition to coaching and mentoring, you’ll work alongside teachers to educate your students in math, English, science, or social studies in the classroom.
Women’s Education
Another way you can help make a positive and lasting change in Uganda is through women’s education volunteer program, where you’ll help provide women with the necessary tools and skills to be successful in life. Many Ugandan women face challenges from discrimination, low social status, lack of economic self-sufficiency, and a greater risk of HIV/AIDS. Through this placement, you will provide guidance on financial management and other activities such as basket weaving, sewing, tailoring, and jewelry making, so they can achieve a certain level of financial independence through income generation for themselves and for their families.
Improve on the Food Security and Nutrition for Children and Women
This project aims to enhance food security and nutrition for children and women in Mukono by providing comprehensive education and practical skills in sustainable agriculture. Through the support of a dedicated agricultural science department, schools will empower girls to learn environmentally sensitive and economically sustainable farming techniques that contribute to job creation and improved food security within the community. The project seeks to expand access to this education, reaching more students and finding innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture.
Project Objectives:
Evaluate Indigenous Food Systems: Assess the nutritional value of local foods in the Mukono community to understand current dietary practices.
Develop Dietary Recommendations: Create guidelines using indigenous foods to improve overall health and nutrition for the Mukono community.
Sustainable Vegetable Production: Establish sustainable vegetable farming practices to meet the nutritional needs of families in Mukono.
Support Agribusiness Development: Assist small-scale women farmers in developing fresh produce businesses to enhance economic empowerment.
School Lunch Program Development: Formulate a plan for a school lunch program that ensures nutritional balance for primary school students.
Maternal and Child Nutrition Education: Create educational resources for pregnant and nursing mothers to promote healthy nutrition for both mother and child.
Methodology:
Food Systems Evaluation: Develop a survey to collect data on local food habits, meals, and dietary patterns in the Mukono community. Conduct a nutritional analysis to create a reference guide for the nutritional value of indigenous foods. Identify potential needs for dietary supplementation and feasible sources.
Dietary Recommendations: Based on the food systems evaluation, make specific dietary recommendations and develop health charts. Educate community members on optimal meal combinations to enhance overall health and nutrition.
Sustainable Vegetable Production: Utilize findings from the food systems evaluation to identify suitable vegetable crops for both family consumption and commercial production. Develop a dual-crop system and train women farmers in all aspects of seed procurement, crop production, processing, and storage. Establish connections with seed donors from public research institutions and aim to create a seed bank for long-term sustainability.
Market Identification and Agribusiness Training: Identify local and international markets for specialty crops to empower women financially. Provide training in basic business skills, including trade, marketing, and customer relations, to support women entrepreneurs.
School Lunch Program: Use data from dietary evaluations to develop a plan for a school lunch program that addresses nutritional needs. Seek potential funding sources and donors to support the program’s implementation.
Maternal and Child Nutrition: Conduct surveys to assess the current care practices for pregnant and nursing women. Develop resources and educational materials to emphasize the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy and nursing. Provide specific dietary recommendations to promote maternal and child health.
Through these targeted objectives and methodologies, the project aims to improve food security, nutrition, and economic opportunities for children and women in Mukono, fostering a healthier and more sustainable community.
